Portfolio 2022-2023
My focus for my final year studying Fine Art at Nottingham Trent was collections. I had recently been to Sir John Soane's Museum in London and was blown away by the collection on statues, sculptures and busts, amongst other collected items that were present. Other types of collections also informed my practise including stamps, taxidermy and stickers. In this final year my art practise really took off, and I displayed installations, projections, animations, paintings and drawings, with some of my most successful pieces being my cut outs (inspired by Lubaina Himid) paired with projections, as I looked to recreate the negtive spaces between the cutouts in the form of shadows and light. These later informed my plaster pieces that I lathed - again, a very new part of practise but one which quickly became integral. The bright colours and fluid spray paint gestures within my pieces are at odds with classical sculpture, but in doing so aim to question the ownership of Britain's found or stolen statues, particularly at a time with the current call to repatriate them to their countries of origin.
My painting 'ALL YOUR STOLEN TREASURES: II' got nominated for the New Blood Art Prize, whilst my installation 'PANIC AT THE PARTHENON' and 'GATHERED FOR THE GATHERING' later was acquired by Ilkeston Contemporary Arts. 'ALL YOUR STOLEN TREASURES: I', 'II' and 'III' were bought by Nottingham Trent University and were put on display in the Vice Chancellor's office.
